How High Performers Break Free From Feeling Stuck And Unfulfilled

Have you ever had the feeling that on paper everything looks perfect, but inside you're completely drained and unfulfilled? Like you’re ticking all the boxes whether it be career, family, friends, hobbies and yet, something still feels off.

I’ve been there myself. There was a time in my career when I had the success I thought I needed and had wanted a job that felt good, a solid team, the sales, a great income, but deep down, I felt like it was burning out and unfulfilled. I felt like I was not growing or in the right environment for me anymore. I’d been giving so much to everyone else over the years that I had nothing left for myself. I was running on empty, and I knew it was time for something to change.

So, if this feels like you I want you to know that you’re not broken, and you’re not alone. So many of us have been there, yet so many of us are too ashamed to talk about it.

But the questions I want to ask you today are:

  • How do you get out of the rut?

  • How do you break free from feeling stuck and start living a life that feels aligned with who you truly are?

  • How do you stop surviving a live a life of a high performer?

Let me share how I did it and how you can too.

Step 1: Reflect on What’s Not Working

I know this sounds simple, but the first step to breaking free is reflection. We get so busy with life that we forget to check in with ourselves. But when you don’t pause, you stay stuck in old patterns that drain your energy and motivation.

So, ask yourself:

  • What’s no longer serving me?

  • What’s draining my energy?

  • What am I tolerating because I think I have to?

For me, this reflection came after a few years of ignoring my own needs and became evident after going through post natal depression. I’d been giving everything I had to my team, family and those around me, but had forgotten about myself in the process. Once I paused and asked these tough questions and got some coaching around it, it became clear: I was running on autopilot.

Step 2: Gain Clarity on What You Truly Want

Once you’ve reflected, the next step is getting clear. If you’re not clear on what you want, how can you expect to move forward? When I transitioned into coaching, I had to get really clear on what lit me up, not just what looked good on paper.

I had to ask myself: What do I truly want? Not just for my career, but in my personal life as well.

So relating this to you ask yourself:

  • What excites me?

  • What do I need to feel more aligned with my true self?

  • How do I want to feel in my day-to-day life?

When I got clear, I realised I didn’t want a job anymore that felt limited. I had certain hours and time I had to work, certain peak and off peak times. Instead, I wanted a life that allowed me to help others, just like I had been helped. So, clarity became my guiding light in making a huge shift.

Step 3: Take Action (Even If It Feels Uncomfortable)

Now comes the hardest part: taking action. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially if you’ve been stuck for a while. But change happens only when you move and, when you move and leave the excuses behind.

When I moved from my leadership role into coaching, it was scary. I had no idea what the next steps would look like, but I knew that staying where I was wasn’t the answer. I had to act, even if it was one small step at a time. I had coached my team for many years but this was different. This was High Performance, coaching individuals to thrive both on a personal and professional level.

Step 4: Reconnect with Yourself

This journey of feeling stuck and unfulfilled isn’t about “fixing” yourself, it’s about rediscovering the person you were meant to be and reconnecting with who you are.

If you’ve been running on empty like I was, it’s time to put yourself first. Prioritise self-care, make space for what excites you and get back in touch with the version of you that feels energised, confident and aligned with your purpose.
