Say the Thing You Have Been Avoiding
Say the Thing You Have Been Avoiding
There's a conversation you're not having. You know the one. It sits in the back of your mind and taxes everything else. You rehearse it in the shower and then you don't have it. And the not-having costs you more than the conversation ever would.
Avoidance isn't free
We tell ourselves we're keeping the peace. We're not. We're paying interest. Every avoided conversation leaks into the relationship, the team, the dinner table. The resentment doesn't disappear. It goes underground and comes out sideways.
Borrow the athlete's frame
An athlete doesn't get to avoid the hard moment. The ball comes, ready or not. Their edge isn't fearlessness. It's a decision made before the moment arrives. You can do the same. Decide, in the calm, that you'll say the honest thing. Then when the moment comes, you're not choosing under pressure. You're executing a choice you already made.
How to say it well
Say it early, before it's a blow-up. Say it plainly, without the twenty-minute preamble. Name the thing, own your part, ask a real question. Kindness and clarity are not opposites. The kindest thing is often the clear thing said sooner.
A question to sit with
What conversation are you avoiding, and what is the avoidance actually costing you?
