You Don’t Need Fixing

As a coach, I hear this all the time. People come to me thinking there’s something wrong with them. They believe they need to be “fixed”. They ask me... am I fixable. Do I need more discipline. More motivation. More willpower. They think if they just push harder, work longer, or try more, they’ll finally get it right.

They come because they think they are broken… they are not.

Most of the time, the problem isn’t that you need to be fixed. What’s usually missing is alignment. You’re not failing and you don’t need more willpower or more motivation. What you need is to understand yourself better and make choices that align with who you are becoming.

High Performance Isn’t About Forcing Change

I’ve worked with many high achievers and let me tell you something: high performance is not about forcing change. It’s not about forcing yourself to be someone you’re not, or trying to be perfect, or constantly feeling like you’re not enough.

High performance is about understanding yourself so deeply that you can make the best choices for your growth. It’s about alignment, not perfection. Perfection will drain you and the more you chase it, the more disconnected you’ll feel from your true self. But alignment? Alignment brings energy. It brings clarity. And it creates the space for real growth.

So, why do we often feel the need to fix ourselves?

When we believe something is wrong with us, we end up in a loop of constant self-criticism. We think that by focusing on our weaknesses or areas where we fall short, we can make ourselves better. But what really happens is we end up spinning our wheels, trying to improve in areas that don’t even matter for where we want to go.

You’re not broken. You’re just evolving. You’re growing into a better version of yourself but that doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you’re becoming.

And often, it’s the way you’re operating that doesn’t align with where you’re heading.

What worked before isn’t working anymore, and that’s not a bad thing. That’s growth.

And it’s in those moments of misalignment that we can step back, take a breath, and ask:

What needs my attention right now?

The Power of Alignment

Alignment is about tuning in to your true self. It’s about recognising what’s in harmony with your goals, your values and the person you’re becoming. When you’re aligned, everything feels easier. You stop forcing things to happen because they just fit. You stop pushing yourself beyond your limits because you’ve found a pace that feels right for you.

You can’t run on the wrong fuel for too long.

If you’re constantly pushing yourself with motivation and willpower, it’s like driving a car without the right fuel. Eventually, you’re going to burn out. But when you align your actions with your true self, you’re operating at full capacity.

Reflection: What Needs Attention in Your Life?

What if you stopped trying to fix yourself and started listening to what actually needs attention? What would change?

Instead of trying to force a change that’s not in alignment with who you are, take a step back and ask yourself:

What is in alignment with my future self?

What do I need to start doing, stop doing, or change to get closer to the person I’m becoming?

This is one of the core elements of high performance: learning how to make the right choices based on WHO YOU ARE becoming, NOT who you were in the past and NOT based on what others expect of you.
